A life lesson from an attempt to climb Mount Vesuvius

My wife Jennie and I had the great opportunity to visit Italy as an early 20th anniversary trip. It was the best time of the school year for us to leave our daughter with grandparents. We were grateful for the hotel points and Delta miles that made the trip amazingly reasonable. Then we got the idea that we should climb Mount Vesuvius.

Mount Vesuvius is an active volcanic mountain close to the city of Naples Italy. It is famous for the eruption in AD 79 that created a frozen in time feel for the ancient city of Pompeii. Jennie and I took the train to the city of Pompeii and saw the amazing almost 2000 year old ruins of the city. We imagined this city bustling with people about the time that Jesus was walking on earth.

We were told that there was a place nearby you could get a ride to close to the top of Mount Vesuvius and take like a 30 minute hike to see inside the mountain. Jennie said she wanted to give it a try so up the side of the mountain we took the trolley type vehicle. They dropped us off, told us when to meet the trolley again and we were on our own.

As we begin to climb the mountain we realized that this was not going to be a leisurely stroll. We passed benches where people were sitting given up. But we pressed on up the mountain. As some point in the climb Jennie got a cramp in her leg that she couldn’t get rid of by stretching. The pain got worse and worse so that she was only able to walk a few steps at a time.

I assured her that she did not need to keep climbing on my account, but she wanted to keep trying. Every time she had to stop we discussed if we should just head back down the mountain. It soon became a discussion of “when” we would head down not “if” we would head back down. Jennie however said she wanted to at least go as far as she could climb. I climbed a little ahead of her and noticed a roof in the distance. We decided that it must be a rest stop. We would climb to that point take some pictures and head back down.

I was impressed with Jennie as she push on to the building. When we finally made it to the building they were selling water and other items. It was then that I realized that less than 20 feet away was a place to look in and see the mountain. We had actually made it. Yes, you could climb further and see all the way around the edge but we were at the top!

This drove home a very important lesson to me. You may be closer to your victory than you think. God has given you a challenge to take on and you are feeling discouraged today. You don’t see an end in sight. You may be further than you think. The author of Hebrews would encourage us to fix our eyes on Jesus and keep moving.

Maybe you are a stay a home mom with four little kids running around driving you crazy. If they fight one more time you figure you are going to explode. I was talking to a lady who just graduated her first from high school. She said that the saying that it goes faster than you think is so true. So you are closer to the top than you think.

Maybe you are a business owner who is plodding away at the business God gave you to start. It seems like you are only taking one small step at a time. Keep plodding away! You may be closer to the goal than you think.

Or maybe you just look out at the world and are discouraged. Maybe you are discouraged by the political landscape and the state of the world as shown to us by CNN. As Paul wrote to the people who lived near Mount Vesuvius, “Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” (Romans 13:11 NLT) So don’t give up because you may be closer to your victory than you even imagine!

How to be 10 times better than your coworkers (Expanded)

Wouldn’t be great to stand out at your job at a whole new level? I was reading from Daniel and a verse captured my imagination. “…he (the king) found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.” (1:20 bold mine) Wouldn’t that be great?

Now I know that we need to be careful not to make a onetime miracle into a principle, but looking at the rest of the chapter there are some things we can apply to our lives. And wouldn’t you be excited about even being found five times better than your coworkers by your boss. Here are some things to do:

Pray for favor with your immediate supervisor and a few levels up.

The passage says that the official above Daniel had favor and sympathy for him (1:9). You can pray that for yourself every day on the way for work. While you are praying it wouldn’t hurt to pray up the organizational chart as well. This doesn’t exclude you if you are self employed. Pray for favor with the people that you do business with everyday. If you are a stay at home mom you can pray for favor with teachers and other parents that you deal with on a regular basis.

Pray for direction to avoid compromise.

Daniel did not want to compromise in the way that he lived (1:8). Ask God to show you where you should take a stand and where compromise may have snuck into your life. Deal with it quickly. In my Charles Finney book he highlights the importance of looking at both the compromise that you are doing and areas where you should be doing something that you are not.

Pray for ability to learn your job and understanding to excel at it.

Daniel and his friends were blessed by God to understand what they needed to do in their job (1:17). We could all use that. God says we can ask for wisdom with we need it (James 1:5) so we might as well ask that for our jobs. Again this applies even if you are in other areas as well. As I lead this non-profit I pray for wisdom to lead it well. Every parent knows they need wisdom to fulfill their role of parent well!

As you pray these three things and work hard you may be surprised at how your boss will end up thinking you are 10 times better than everyone else!

You will never have all that you want in Jesus without this

Working in my ministry for the last 10 years has been mostly a one person thing. Don’t get me wrong at some point I would love to have a part time administrative assistant. I actually started researching five years ago. I have put together job descriptions. I have even had people prophecy over me the importance of this position to the ministry.

Then a few days ago I came across this website that allowed you to outsource 25 tasks to an assistant overseas for US $79 a month. I figured it was a low cost experiment and signed up for a month. After only a few days I have learned a lot. I learned things I like and don’t like that I never would have figured out in 5 years of research. Whether I use this service again or not again after the first month I am further ahead than those five years of research.

It got me thinking about how this true in our spiritual life as well. Sometimes it is easier to adjust a moving vehicle than one that is in park. Maybe this is why Jesus called his disciples to follow Him and then explained it as they went along. As Henry Blackaby said Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, He didn’t give them a map. Some things can only be learned in the doing.

There are so many applications of this to our spiritual journey. Maybe you need some mentors in your life. Rather than worry about finding the perfect mentor who is someone you could email or call today with a specific question you are struggling with right now? After a few emails, phone calls and lunch meetings you will know a little more of what you are looking for in a group of mentors (note I say group rather than just one mentor).

We want to start a Bible study plan. Start with reading a few verses every day. It is later on down the road that you can figure out if you should add Bible memorization or word studies or something else. A prayer life will grow, but it is easier to see areas to that need growth after the conversation has started. Then you can buy a book on prayer. Okay you can do that now. Has God put in your heart to start a ministry or write a book? Action is important. As I shared in a video it is important to start somewhere. The little actions make all of the difference.

As I mentioned at the top about my assistant I am still in the process of learning. I may get a month in and need to take a step back to start over. But going back at this point is still progress because I will have learned a path I don’t want to go down again. What action will you take today?
